Slate is used by students of every age, so safety is part of how it's built. Here's what schools and parents can count on.
Every student can report or block another account from any profile, deck, or game. A real person reviews reports, usually within 24 hours. Content that draws several independent reports auto-hides pending review. We warn, suspend, or remove accounts that break our guidelines.
Students under 13 need a parent or guardian to approve their account before it goes live. Until then the account is limited: no social features, no public profile. Parents get a simple, read-only summary of learning progress. No message reading.
Younger students are private by default and never appear in public search or global leaderboards. Teens default to friends-only. A student can make their settings stricter, but never looser than their age allows.
Students and schools own their data. Anyone can export everything on their account as a ZIP from Settings. We collect what we need to run Slate and nothing we sell. Assistant chats are private to the student and auto-purge after 12 months.
Deleting an account is real and permanent. We deactivate right away, then erase the profile, decks, notes, and progress across our systems after a 30-day grace period. Sign back in during that window to cancel.
Slate is built to meet COPPA for students under 13 and FERPA for school records. School accounts are covered by our Data Processing Agreement. We hold student data in the United States.
